With the advent of autonomous vehicles comes a greater need to incorporate safety-related functionality that can sense and react to hazardous situations. This has increased the need to incorporate Functional Safety as part of a vehicle's design process. Yet Functional safety, as defined by a number of IEC and ISO documents, is viewed by many engineers as a document-centric clerical endeavor, rather than the engineering endeavor it really is. One of the least pleasant endeavors is the time-consuming need to interpret documents such as IEC 61508 and ISO 26262, and determine exactly what compliance steps must be performed by the design engineers. In this session we will show that Functional Safety is an engineering process as challenging as engineering the product itself. We will also demystify the related documents, and spell out what compliance steps are needed, along with practical suggestions for implementing them, within the context of autonomous vehicles. Our goal is to make the presentation practical, so we will not be giving a dry-literal presentation of the functional safety documents, but rather interpret them in practical terms that are of most value (and more palatable) to engineers.
